Come explore the rich history of colonial New York City through the eyes of one of its greatest citizens, Alexander Hamilton.
The Tour begins on the Common, an historic communal region where Hamilton became of age through discourse and military action. But our story begins in the Caribbean with Alexander’s letter to his father concerning the recent devastating hurricane, He shares part of that letter and inspirational stories of how his mother adorned young hamilton with a thirst for knowledge.
Paul Revere arrived into New York with news of the “Boston Tea Party” just as Alexander Hamilton arrived fresh from the stiffening abuses of the sugar cane slave plantations of Saint Croix. As a new student in King’s College, he quickly fell in with the Sons of Liberty and had a plethora of historic adventures. Alexander will happily share some of his first hand accounts to history. Ask him how it felt to hear the Declaration of Independence being read while looking at the largest navy enemy force assembled since Carthage of classical history.
Visiting the 1766 St. Pauls Chapel brings back memories of early morning devotionals whilst in college and attending services with President Washington immediately after his inauguration. America’s oldest war memorial has a twist of fate connection to Hamilton. Ask him what it is; hint: his father in law.
Broadway’s history as the first road in New York foretells that Hamilton would have memories to share. From dragging cannons while under fire from the HMS ASIA to being celebrated with his own ship, the Hamiltonian, leading the parade up Broadway celebrating the ratification of the Constitution. How about when Jefferson found him in despair of losing the Assumption Bill and the subsequent invitation to dinner or when Hamilton challenged future President James Monroe to a duel. Every footstep walks on history
New York serves as the backdrop for Hamilton’s unbridled initiative. After passing the Bar in one instead of three years, Alexander presided over America’s first murder trial with Aaron Burr serving as assistant council. The creation of the Bank of New York changed the fabric of possibilities for this great city while giving Hamilton the experiential support to eventually become America’s first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton is on the $10 bill due to his economic plans formulated here in New York.
We only have a country because the states ratified the Constitution. James Madison and Alexander Hamilton wrote most of the Federalist papers which continue to serve as the deepest insight into how and why we fashioned our government. Behind the scenes this relationship is fracturing into the first two political parties. Ask Alexander why he went on to support Thomas Jefferson of the rival party.
The status and respect of a nation stakes its claim at its founding. Hamilton realized that if he is seen as corrupt then our country will have forever lost the promise of equality. After many years of talking with George Washington, Hamilton appreciates why he has to sacrifices his family honor for the honor of the country. What Alexander did not know is how the Reynolds affair will be connected to his fateful duel with Burr
